As we know, it is not easy teach mathematics because we find that students are also not easy in learning mathematics. There is not great way to teach mathematics. So, Cocroft Report recommend variations of learning, such:
1. exposition method by the teacher
2. discussion method between teachers with students and between students with students.
3. problem solving methods
4. discovery method
5. basic skills training and principles methods
6. application method.
Then, teacher have some difficult about: understanding the meaning of theory, how to implement it, the existing system, environmental conditions, learning facilities, differences mathematics ability of students, Target achievement of high final examination and completion of the syllabus, develop technology of learning mathematics.
Nature of mathematics are: abstract, universal, formal, objective, rational, theoretical, neutral, and value free. Essence Learning of Mathematics: Bringing knowledge subjective and objective mathematics through social interaction to get, tested, representing acquired new knowledge. Then the substance mathematics are: mathematics is an activity search patterns and relationships, mathematics is the creativity that requires imagination, intuition and invention, mathematics is an activity of problem solving, mathematics is a tool communicate.
The nature of student learning mathematics: students will learn if given the motivation, students learn by their own way, students learn independently and through cooperation, students need a context and different situations in learning.
There are three steps to develop design of mathematics learning: teaching preparation phase, learning phase, evaluation phase. Development design of mathematics learning need to pay attention/promote change paradigm:
1. Teacher Centered -- Student Centered
2. Transfer of knowledge -- Cognitive Development
3. Authoritarian--Democratic
4. Teacher Initiatives--Student Initiatives
5. Passive Students --Active Students
6. Exposition -- Variation methods, tools, approaches
7. Mathematics Absolutist --Mathematics School
8. Abstract, Memory --Concrete, Comprehension, Application
9. Very formal--Informal
10. Sentralistic--Autonomy
11. Highly Structured--Flexible
